From: boyle@cactus.org (Craig Boyle) Subject: Sludgy transmission oil? Date: Sat, 15 Jan 1994 03:10:01 -0500
a Putting off many really important things I changed the differential oil, transmission oil, engine oil and bled the brakes with my one many mity-vac. Other than the engine oil, this is the first change for all of the fluids in 30k ish miles. The transmission drain plug had a thick layer (> 0.25 inches) of sludge and a good amount of metal filings (attracted by the drain magnet. I was surprised by the density of the sludge. Refilling the transmission I could only get 1.25-1.5 quarts in, where it should take 2. Hindsight made me think that my transmission has 0.75 quarts of sludge that won't drain out. Anybody else had similar experiences? I'm reluctant to drain out the oil because the new stuff is redline and slick50, i.e. $25. I wish I'd tried to rinse the sludge out with some cheap stuff. The differential oil looked clean. Craig
