Yes, it is a constant booming sound, especially noticeable at speed,
which is why I attributed it to tire noise at first.

I switched off the engine while crusing at about 40 mph and the noise
was still there so it's definitely not motor/exhaust related.

To those who suggest I get rid of my female passenger, I did! but the noise 
didn't go away (though the complain did, so I guess it is somewhat attenuated,
.)
