Today I took my black 94 to an upholstery shop and had them give me some headroom. They cut some foam out of the seat bottom and replaced (some?) of it with softer foam, and cut the side bolsters to match. Cost was $95. The upshot is that I no longer hit the roof support ribs when I lean back. And I believe I'll now be able to buy a hardtop (they do have less headroom than the cloth top, right?). I haven't yet noticed, but given that I'm sitting lower, it ought to be easier to see those traffic signals now.
