From: Vlad-Erik Kimsson Subject: Squeaks, Fogging, Weather, and noises... Date: Tue, 8 Feb 1994 10:05:20 -0500
Regarding squeaking brakes: I had this problem for a while, no matter (as you note) how clean the discs and pads look. The problem is that the metal of the caliper presses against the metal of the pad, which is rigid and pressed against a metal disc. The result is that it resonates, much like a bowed violin string. It's normal. But it's not even vaguely pleasant, and the solution is simple. Get some "Brake Disc Quiet" goop from Parts Warehouse (or whichever) and put it on the BACK of the disc, where the caliper presses against it. Do this for all four discs, and revel in the deafening silence. Regarding fogging: I've been bothered by this for a long time, especially in the winter. A couple of days ago I put some "Rain-X Anti Fog" on the inside, and it seems to work really well. That and the defroster keep it so that I can avoid hitting the lumbering sedans prowling the streets of Champaign. Regarding weather: Why do people live in cold places? Yesterday, I was driving around with the top down, and today we're getting methane sleet... :) The miata performs like a champ. (OK, like a champ on ice skates). Regarding noises: Does anyone feel like making a compendium of noises? Many seem very common (hood latch, loosened welds on downtube exhaust shield, passenger seat) and also hard to troubleshoot. The dealer needlessly overhauled my transmission trying to find a sound... Same goes for bolts to tighten around the magic 30K. The car starts to sound like a toolbox (rattle, rattle...) Wishing you a safe and enjoyable road salt season, Dave Kim
