Will Z. was asking about performance chips (and other things) for his MX-5. A few weeks ago I called Autothority Performance Engineering (3769-B Pickett Rd., Fairfax, VA 22031 - ph. 703-323-0919) for info on the Mazda chips they advertise in AutoWeek. I was told that they weren't out yet; it would be a couple more months or so, maybe more. I was also told that the cost would be a few hundred bucks - not nailed down yet. And finally, that the horsepower gain would be on the order of 5 - 10 hp, as I recall. (It's been a while, and I pretty much wrote off the idea as not worth pursuing, so I don't recall the exact numbers, which were pretty vague anyway.) As I recall, there was something about having to replace more than just the chip itself, due to the way the chip was installed in the Miata, but I don't really recall. Anyway, give them a call if you want. As for me, there must be more financially efficient ways to get more power - $50 - $75 per horse sounds kind of high to me. Then again, speed costs money - how fast do you want to go? --Jack M.
