Actually, the alarm didn't seem to bother the cats much. They just tneded to
look curiously at the place that they thought the alarm was coming from and
then would gracefully recline and watch it to be sure that nothing else was
going to happen. 
 
There are sprays to discourage cats from doing things like scratching - pet
stores will have them - but I would want to know more about their chemical
makeup and their effects on vinyl before I got carried away.  The cats don't
after all, present any real hazard to the Miata, beyond esthetic, and then only
in the view of some...
