One cat will never sleep on two Miatae simultaneously.  In general, N cats
will never sleep on N+1 Miatae simultaneously.  Therefore you need to buy
at most one more Miata than you have cats.  The lower bound on the number
of extra Miatae you need varies with the sociability of the cats, but is
in no case less than one.  This will allow you to drive your Miata while
the cats are sleeping on theirs.
