Ah, but what about the famous paper by Bernoulli and Bravo (1882) that showed clearly that there is in fact a finite *upper* bound in this case that can be approximated by (N+1)^G where G is the ratio of the number of years you have been married to the number of years you have not been married. Maybe some examples will help. First, if you are 25 and never been married, then G = 0/25 = 0 and (N+1)^G = 1. Thus you only need 1 Miata. This makes sense, because they are your cats and you don't mind where they sleep. Now lets say you are 45 and you've been married for 20 years, G = 20/25 = 0.8 and (N+1)^G = (N+1)^0.8. If N = 0 (you have no cats), then (0+1)^0.8 = 1 Miata. That makes sense. If N = 1 (one cat), then (1+1)^0.8 = 1.74 Miata. So about 3/4 of the time, you would need a second Miata. If N = 2, then (2+1)^0.8 = 2.41 Miata. Now, you always need second Miata and about half the time you need a third.
