Fellow fiends: Thought you might be interested in the following, appearing in the "World news this week" section of the 2/28/94 issue of AutoWeek: "RACING IN THE STREETS. "Street competition" is the pitch for Masda's M2 1028, a Japan-only limited-edition Miata derivative. M2 1028 is an everyday road-racer, a lightened version of the base Miata with a 10-point roll cage bolted around the back of the cabin. A "cabin" in a Miata? That's right, a lighter-than-usual hard top replaces the folding top. The car is 110 pounds lighter than the standard Miata, thanks to an aluminum trunk lid, lighter alloy wheels and special seats. The twin-cam engine gains new pistons, cams, exhaust manifold and engine control unit for a 10-pony increase to 140 hp. Compression goes from 9.0:1 to 10.6:1. Mazda plans to sell 300 units, but the number could rise with demand. On launch day, 50 cars already had been sold-at $26,000 a pop." Only one comment: sounds very interesting but what kind of a name is "M2 1028?" Cheers, Will Zehring
