Is there a vinyl repair kit that works well?
The miata manual has a vinyl repair kit offered.  ask the dealer.
I see vinyl repair kits everywhere too, in car shops mostly
to repair torn seats.

It depends on how esthetically offensive it is to you.  You may be
able to hide it with good polish or paint (sparingly of course).

If you're thinking of inevitably replacing the top, why not try
the glue approach.  Nothing to loose by then, and since the full
thickness of the top was not compromised, it should only act to
reinforce the top, rather than fully keep it together.
