Just remembered an article from long, long ago, in (I believe) Car & Driver Mag. They had some good suggestions RE: Preventing your car from being ripped off. As I recall, it was directed to NYC, but the same principle could apply almost anywhere today. All one need do is to choose the heaviest tools from your Ideal Miata Tool Kit (the roadside rock, humongoid screwdriver, etc.) and LET FLY on your Miata! Go over that baby for about 15 minutes, until the sheet metal is TOTALLY TRASHED. Don't forget to crack/scratch the glass while you're at it - if you're good, you'll keep the glass damage within the legally allowable maximum so you won't have to replace it with new. You might consider using contrasting spray paint on the top - that way you'll still have a secure top with no holes, but it will look like excrement. Perhaps some duct tape would be a nice touch too. After all this, NO scum worth his/her door jimmy will give your Miata a second glance. Meanwhile, you'll still have a Miata that is mechanically sound and a ball to drive, and with a nice interior to boot. (However, a little spray paint in the interior would add to the authenticity of your trash job.) As I recall, the writer of the article promoting the above auto theft solution, proposed going into business: TRASH-A-CAR was conceived (although perhaps later stillborn). If I perceive sufficient demand for such a service through responses to this message, I might be persuaded to open a franchise in the DC area. My rates will be somewhat lower than for even the cheapest alarm system (unless one orders the Deluxe Trash Job, including interior and top detailing). Hard tops are extra. Now taking orders on a first come, first served basis. For those of you in the Northwest part of the country, I understand Tonya Harding has the Oregon franchise already. Just hit #*#* on your touch tone phone. --Jack (should have posted this on April 1) M.
