I delayed my Miata purchase due to the del Sol rumors: Early press
leaks pegged it as a mid-engine, RWD vehicle.  Reminded me of a '90s
X1/9 w/o quirky electrics.  As soon as AutoWeek confirmed it was 
FWD, heavier, slower & more $$ than the CRX it was replacing I bought 
my Miata.  Case closed.

I believe the del Sol was best summed up by a letter to the editor of 
AutoWeek, which basically said "for $17K I can get a 110 hp, FWD, 2 seat
del Sol, or a four seat, 275hp Camaro?   Is this a trick question?"

The first generation MR2 is a pretty close to the Miata on the autocross 
course - my former office-mate has one, and we're pretty evenly matched.  
The newer MR2s, esp the turbos are quite a bit faster.  The roof doesn't 
go down, however.
