My '92 made that clatter exactly twice. The temperature was below 40 degrees, and the car had not been driven for a few days. The incidences were a year apart, and the car had under 20,000 miles. Note that the manual has a warning about this: NOTE: You may hear noise (from the valve tappets) if the engine has not been in use for a few days. At normal operating temperature, this should stop. If it doesn't, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer. Although it sounds terrible, I don't think any harm is being done, unless it doesn't stop.
