From: a.mccombs3@genie.geis.com Subject: FRONT PLATES Date: Fri, 1 Apr 1994 06:57:03 -0500
Skip this if you've seen it before - but I pulled the front license plate bracket off of our Miata, and secured the plate directly to the mounting bolts for the bracket, up inside the "mouth". One has to put a slight bend or curvature across the plate, since the bolts are vertical (thus the upper edge of the plate becomes horizontal). If you step back two or three car lengths, the plate is perfectly readable from sitting-in-car height, where a cop would see it. Don't know about other states, but in MD (where the car is licensed) the law says on the subject of front plates, essentially only that there must be a front plate, and that it must be visible. It's only been a few months since I did this, but I haven't been stopped yet, for that or for anything else. One disclaimer: This blocks some of the airflow into the radiator, so I don't know how well it will cool in the summer. We have had a couple 70+ degree days, though, and the temp. indicates normal, same as always. --Jack M.--
