Bill , I tried to mail you direct but your mail address Bill.Allen@metrokc.gov seems to get bounced - any good ideas ? Is the article on superchargers too large to put out to the miata group ? - Jonathan Eric Jacobs asks if anyone has installed the Sebring supercharger on their Miata yet and requests comments about extra load on engine components. My Eaton/GP Products/Downing Atlanta/Sebring Supercharger was installed before Norman Garrett decided to coin the Sebring Supercharger name. The Miata now has about 1500 miles with the unit. I interviewed Norman and wrote a lengthy article for our Chapter's newsletter, Miata Sounder (December issue.) I'd be glad to send you a copy, if you send your mailing address. Norman intends to market an Eaton supercharger for BMW's and Honda's, too. So he chose the Sebring name to market under. As to extra load on the engine, Norman has been pretty conservative. Boost is only six psi and the existing fuel pump and computer in the Miata is used. The 160 hp, 155 lb ft ratings are comparable to the BBR turbocharger ratings that British Mazda were honoring their three-year warranty for. I hear from Al Staats that they may have discontinued that practice. The only stories I know of where the Miata engine/drive-train was stressed have been associated with 200 hp+ units. I know of two supercharged units in Seattle that seem to be holding up to the loads fairly well. One of those cars is autocrossed regularly and has had some clutch and transmission or driveshaft wear. I could go on at length about the good driveability of my supercharged Miata and the design features which seem to be the reason for it. If you have specific questions that my limited experience could answer, I'd be glad to respond.
