The latest Autoweek (May 2) has a couple interesting things in it. 1. Classifieds, top of p. 65: There's an ad for an aftermarket antilock brake system - Brake Guard Safety System, 1-800-723-1250. Wathehell, the call is free - I figured I'd ask for info. The guy on the other end (Chicago area) says the system operates by rapidly releasing pressure on the system (like on the order of 100 Hz.), depending upon the amount of brake applied - the greater the pressure in the system, the more rapid the pulsing. There is NO wheel speed sensing in the system. He claimed that half the NASCAR cars are using it, but those guys still leave black streaks on the pavement when they lock 'em up too, so I dunno. The only other aftermarket antilock system I've heard of is a restrictor installed in the system to prevent a driver from applying sufficient pressure to lock up the wheels - not a good idea, as if you adjust such a system for the worst possible conditions (e. g., wet ice) then you'll coast into the next county before you stop - no matter what the conditions. (Assuming you don't encounter another decleration means first.) They are supposedly sending info - I'll let you know what I learn about this. If anyone else has heard anything about this system, please let the rest of us know what you know - and what you think about it. 2. Autoweek, same issue, p. 5: An article on the various aftermarket companies which are tweaking the new Mustangs. Larry Shinoda (who goes back to the '70s with Mustang development for Ford) has taken a Jack Roush- developed version of the old Boss 429 engine, punched out to 604 inches (that's 9.9 liters!) for the new Mustang. The article says "Surprisingly little modification was needed to the Cobra ('94 Mustang) to accept the big- block motor." Hmmm-- The Monster Miata uses the 302 Ford V-8 right out of the Mustang, with no real problems insofar as physical dimensions are concerned. If the 604 fits in a Mustang with "little modification," then the Miata engine bay should accept.... Who wants to be first??? --Jack (I may be crazy, but not that crazy!) M.--
