Look on the bright side - it probably would have been a lot
worse, if you hadn't spent all that time applying wax!
A few layers of wax really helps protect the original 
paint (and helps to justify all the time devoted to the task!),
and makes the clean up a _lot_ easier than it ordinarily would
have been.

In any event, sorry to hear about the damage.
