I just installed plastic door sill protectors bought from Miata Accesories.
Even though the four screws are as tight as I dare make them without stripping
the plastic seats, the sill is so loose that it actually fell off the car when
a passenger touched it with her foot. One could screw the things into the metal
sill - but there must be more clever and non-destructive solutions that one of
you has invented. 

And on another note, what do people use to remove dried on bugs.
