I replaced my stock tires with 509s a couple of years ago after hitting 
something on the freeway and wasting one of the stock tires.  I've seen the 509s
for about $90 mail order (I think mine cost about the same from a local tire 
dealer, I think it was Discount Tire).

I immediately noticed two major differences:
  These tires are *much* stickier; cornering became a lot more fun!
  They cause the car to wander more on the freeway.

I think the tradeoff was worth it.
