Dunno if early Datsun Z-Cars have similar window mechanisms to Miatas, but I once had a misalignment problem with a door window in our Z car. Took it to the "professionals" (an independent shop with many years of experience with early Datsuns) to check it out, along with some other problems. They said they couldn't adjust it; it needed a new regulator. A few weekends later, I was fiddling with the car, trying to sort out some of the things they said they couldn't fix, or cost too much, or whatever. Pulled the inner door panel off and started fiddling with the regulator. Loosened up all the screws that held it in place, rolled up the window all the way, whereupon the whole regulator and window said "clunk" and shifted a bit to the proper alignment in the window frame. Tightened the screws, and have had no problems with it since. >From the description, I gather the Miata window problem is a different one, so the above is not going to be an exact prescription for a fix. Nevertheless, there seems to be a mindset today that the only way to fix things is to remove the old unit and replace with a new one - even though there's adjustment built in somewhere to solve the problem. If it were my Miata, I think I'd look further at adjusting the problem away, although the dealer might be right about the remove and replace concept. --Jack M.--
