My friendly auto body friend told me over the weekend of a new product from 
3M or PPG (the big US auto finish suppliers).  It is similar to a clearcoat,
but thicker, softer and removable.  You apply it over waxed paint and it 
reduces the incidence of chips.  I'm going to talf to him later this week and
see about applying it to the hood leading edge on the racecar (== don't care
too much about the paint) to see how it works.

Has anyone else tried this stuff or something like it?
