Tom, as I was reading of your friend's experience with an A/T Miata, for the first few lines I thought we had a mutual acquaintance - until you noted his ownership of a couple of Italian cars and that his given name is "Dave." While Anne and I were in San Diego, another No. VA Z Car Club member attended the convention and rented (from Hertz) an A/T Miata. He detested the A/T, noting that the shift points were wrong for the autocross course. it was gutless, and generally not nice at all. However, when I asked him how he liked the Miata in general, he replied, "I like it - I like a LOT!" This from an SCCA ITS Datsun 240Z racer. We may have another Miata convert here. He currently owns another Mazda, a 323, as I recall (may be mistaken). Needless to say, Anne and I strongly encouraged him to try a manual transmission Miata, and I don't think he needed much convincing. BTW: He took first place in the "abused rental car" class (I am not making this up!) at the autocross. Shades of the '60s, and the Hertz Shelby GT 350 rentals. --Jack M.--
