The stop is an adjustable bolt on the upper part of the bellcrank, not a stop on the floor, so carpets, etc. won't affect it unless they are so high as to hit the pedal before it bottoms. I have my doubts about the risk of damage... there's a stop on the throttle body, the cable itself is pretty strong, and the travel stop on the pedal is on a fairly flexible metal tab, so I'm not sure that it does all that much good when you have an adrenalin-loaded Miata driver at the wheel. For what it's worth, I have raised mine somewhat and have the stop adjusted so it just touches as the cable pulls taut against the throttle body stop, sort of as a strain relief. I check it periodically for cable stretch which might prevent wide-open throttle, but so far it's been stable.
