As an alternative:

I have the Miya 'frame rack' that looks like a NASCAR roll cage. 
Cost $300. Only downside is it attaches with rubber cups and hooks
to the windshield frame. Rear attachment is over the rear deck knobs that 
normally accept the hardtop latches. Since my car is a daily driver, and my 
only one, I accept this. Sadly though. The flexibility of the Miya
rack is amazing, accepting ski racks, kayak racks, even luggage containers.

It does get a lot of second take, moreso with a nineteen foot kayak
on it.
