From: jmurphy@helix.nih.gov (Joe Murphy) Subject: autox camber settings Date: Tue, 1 Nov 1994 15:19:01 -0500
I wanted to follow-up with the results of the camber adjustments I made for autoxing, several people wanted to know how they affected the cars performance. The first autox with the new settings was wet and I made several mistakes, so the results were inconclusive. Last weekend there was another event in Baltimore and it was dry. This was a fast course, four or five places I was at the redline in second gear. It was a fun course, but it was also pretty technical. I was intimidated, especially after a Dodge Viper came within a foot of t-boneing a concrete light post - it would have been a big shunt. The format was 4 runs, of which my best was a ~47.4. Andy Polling had the fastest Miata time which was the third overall best time of ~46.020. I think the C stock field had around 12-15 cars. I am not sure who had the fastest time, but I think it was 45.5 or 45.0 (a 924s or a MR2). I then did four fun runs and got down to a 46.7, which made me pretty happy. This is my first year doing this and I think the camber setting gave me 1-2 seconds. Again I went from stock settings to -1.5 front, -2.0 rear 1/16 toe out front (with Yokohama 185/60 AOO8R). The handling was _definetly_ improved, with more grip overall and less oversteer. On the negative side, for the first time I did lock up the tires a couple times, which may be due to the negative camber giving less grip under braking. But overall, the changes were worth it. So now all I need to do is drive faster! Andy didn't notice that I turned his A/C on either. But it probably only cost him a couple seconds...
