pad wear can be pretty variable, depending on how and where you drive.
highway miles can stretch the life _a lot_.
(and of course, your mechanic may be more willing to replace them
early than you would, since it's a good way to make money :-)
for the record, i replaced my front pads at about 58K miles, the rears
are still ok at 65K.
