Regarding the discussion of automatic vs. manual transmissions:

I suspect that the ratio in Europe is very different.  In fact, I've found that 
it is often not possible to rent a standard transmission car at your typical car
rental agency like Hertz.  On the other hand, in Europe the default rental seems
to be a standard transmission car in each category; you pay extra for an 
automatic.

In fact, I have recently returned from a trip to Austria where I had a manual 
transmission car reserved but Hertz upgraded me on the spot to a Beemer.  It was
also a manual.  Pretty nice wheels.  And it was red, which is important! :-)
