Now that my Ford Probe with a fine Mazda automatic transmission has been in the shop for four weeks and is in the second round of repairs, other obvious advantages of manuals stands out: When you buy the car, you save $1000. When the clutch begins to wear out, you can still drive, albeit carefully. Unlike steering and brakes, automatics do not default to non-powered operation. It cannot possible cost as much to repair a manual as an automatic ($2200 and rising - thank god for insurance, although I don't have a check in hand yet). They're lots more fun to drive.
