I promised that I'd post the results of my "sandpaper search":

My local auto supply store stocks fine grit papers (2000-2500, etc.).
They're manufactured by the 3M co.
Retail: $0.38 per half-sheet. (Hutchens Automotive Supply).

To obtain this stuff locally, it seems that one would need to find a 
decent retailer with access to 3M products.  A large auto supply store
with a large selection of body filler/putty supplies would probably
be a safe bet, or perhaps a local body shop.  Someone (Tom?) posted
recently that Maguire's stocks it as well, but I haven't seen it in their
wax catalog, and I don't know their prices.
