You do not need to unzip the window, but if you don't you will eventually 
(and that won't ber long in San Diego - the hotter the quicker) acquire a 
crease across the window THAT WON'T GO AWAY.  My son did it once before I 
could caution him and the crease from that single event here in Maryland 
(in June) stayed with the window for two months.  There is a method of 
inserting some kind of large tube in the window (for it to roll around) 
to keep the fold from being a "crease", but I thinkl it is more difficult 
than unzipping.

In fact, unzipping is really no sweat at all.  I still do it with my seat 
belt on and with only my right arm.  You'll get the hang of it.
