The back-up lights are fused through the 10A "meter" fuse.  I don't have 
the owner's manual in front of me, but I think that fuse in the cockpit 
fuse box, not the engine compartment.

If the fuse isn't the problem, I wouild suspect the back-up light switch 
on the transmission linkage.  I would further suspect that it came 
unplugged rather than the switch being broken.

Still think you've driven cars that handle better?  I haven't, although I 
haven't driven much exotic.
