I think the best solution to interior lighting is the Mighty Products
lighted mirror.  Every Miata should have one.  

However, the reason I am posting this is to mention a cute little thing I
picked up today at Brookstone.  It is the Rechargeable Dashlite (TM)
Flashlight.  It plugs into the lighter socket and it fits perfectly into
the space of my '94. It only sticks out from the dash one and a half
inches, so it is completely forward of the center console.  The switch is
on top, so you have a light in the ignition switch area at the flip of a
switch.  Since it runs on a rechargeable battery, it works whether the
ignition is on or off.  And you have a removable flashlight with charged
batteries to read a map,  look into the trunk, etc.
