Regarding some recent questions on the correct way to lower the soft top -- many have rightly pointed out the need to relieve tension on the top first, then unzip the window before lowering the entire top. However, it doesn't appear widely known that installation of the vinyl boot is not only for cosmetic reasons. The boot blocks the sun's UV rays and keeps the interior surface of the top material and the rubber weather seals from dying a premature death. Also, a great deal of dust, dirt, and road grime settles on the folded top and plastic window. This becomes microscopic "sand paper" as the vinyl top material and deck carpet constantly rub both surfaces of your plastic window. Even with towels, pillow cases, or a commercial window protector on both sides of the lowered window, this fine road dust will still do some damage. The 60 seconds it takes to put on or take off the boot is certainly cheap insurance and should be well worth the time. To avoid the top-down ritual totally, just leave the top down and the boot on and then install a complete cockpit cover over the open car when you park (naturally in safe areas, eh? I admit I always set the alarm and use The Club on the steering wheel no matter where I park). This cover will repel light rain, prying eyes, bird droppings, and goes on/off in about a minute. Also stops wear/tear on the top as it is constantly folded/unfolded several times a day. It is one of the best and most used Miata accessories I own. Cheers, DRAKE A.
