I know in a recent post I said I had driven better handling cars, well, I said that after only having my Miata for 1 day and I hadn't really had a chance to push it. Well, last night I certainly had a chance. I live in San Diego and we got a pile of rain and wind over the last day. I bought the car Tuesday night and it rained all day and night Tues and all day Wed. I was driving in the rain, with the top up. At about 10:00 at night the rain quit for a couple hours and I hit the road, top down! I know I had people looking at me funny because it was cold and dark and here I am driving around with the top down, hours after the rain had stopped. I didn't care, I was having FUN. Unfortunately, I forgot to unzip the window, but after getting numerous responses, I will ALWAYS unzip my window when the top goes down. Anyway, because of this rain, many trees had fallen down and were in the roadways. Being mesmerized with my wonderful car I forgot about this as I was zipping down La Jolla Village Drive (for you locals) when I suddenly saw a HUGE tree blocking all but the left most lane. (I was in the middle lane going abotu 45) The little Miata just swooped to the left and went right through the clearing and I freaked out. I had reacted more out of instinct and less out of actual planning. I had to do a u-turn and go back and look at what I had missed. WOW. The tree was BIG. If I had hit it at my speed, with the top down, I would have done serious damage to my 2 day old car (it a 1990, but new to me) and I wouldn't been eating major plants! I take it back....The Miata is the BEST handling car on the road!! My old RX handled well, but not THAT good. Sean Crandell scrandel@sdcc13.ucsd.edu 1990 RED 1990 A (Not yet named)
