Miateers,
In reading some of the postings on this subject it has just occurred to 
me why there is so much more 'junk' on a newsgroup than on a mailing 
list.  With my capabilitites anyway, I am notified of new newsgroups and 
asked if I want to subscribe.  With mailing lists, there is no global 
invitation to join as there is with the newsgroups, so no one knows about 
it unless they already have an interest in it.  Interested parties have 
to go out looking for it.  This in itself dissuades a large number of the 
curious, or bored from junking it up.
