There is good and bad to both.  In my case I have to vote for keeping the
mailing list.  Many people here have their access through their jobs I do
not.  I have one phone line to my house and pay a local provider for access
to internet.  I can easily handle email offline which helps to keep phone
line open.  While I can do the same thing with newsgroups it is such a pain
to do that I will not do it.

To each his own.
