To: miata@jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu I just picked up a story on the AP wire (I happen to have rather immediate access). It could impact all of us. HIROSHIMA, Japan According to Mazda executive vice president Henry Wallace, Mazda's worldwide performance in the first quarter of this year was much worse than expected. In an effort to save the company further losses, the rest of the 95 model year production of the RX-7 and MX-5 Miata may be scrapped. A final decision will be made next week. "We hate to see these models go," said Wallace, "but we feel the survival of the company must come first. The niche sports car market has been losing money since early in 1993 and Mazda cannot bear the cost any longer." A strong enthusiast following, especially for the Miata, is expected to continue well into the next century.
