Alex, you make some good points. My point was simply that you are better off with more power. If you have a 10 watt amp and want to drive a speaker at say 95 db SPL, the amp will be working at, let's say 90% of capacity. The same set up with a 100 watt amp will only require the amp to be at 50% of its rated capacity. (I am pulling the figures out of the air just to illustrate). I "blew up" a pair of speakers with the "20" watts/channel out of my Sony deck. Speakers were rated to "handle" 50 watts. Got new speakers and a 100 watt/channel amp and have never had a problem. An overdriven amp can send out DC that you may not be able to hear as distortion, especially with the top down at 60 MPH, but that will cook the voice coils in your speakers.
