From: Blairs Subject: Of octane, BRG MX5s, Z28s, and most likely a decision. Date: Sun, 2 Apr 1995 00:35:47 -0500
Well, I did it. I went to my local Mazda dealer, and asked to drive a Miata. It was busy, my drive was (Literally!) dealer drives off lot, up hill, Paul drives down hill, into lot. First thoughts: My GOD! Look at all this legroom! (I first got into the passenger's side, and stretched my legs. Wow. Then I moved into the drivers side, squeezed myself in [the dealer was short], and was thinking "Great. Cramped. So much for the...[CLUNK, as I hit the seat adjuster and SHOOT backwards]...Pedals!? I can't reach the pedals!" A bit of an understatement, I COULD, but not depress them - and I'm 5'11.75". (179cm or so) What a shifter! [CLICK] In first! [CLICK] In second! And I was impressed with the Saturn's shifter. Thought IT was smooth. Never thought I'd see a five-way switch for a shifter. ::Insert BIG grin:: UGH! Not EVER going to get a red one, though that Merlot color is nice...wonder what my chances of finding a BRG are. Racing Green...::Drool:: I haven't driven it enough to know, but if my impressions are correct, I'll be owning one of these rather soon. A few months at most, and then most likely for a good portion of my life. What a nice sounding exhaust. It's not 300HP, but the addition of a turbocharger will help that. Now what I really need to know are the following: A. What are my chances of finding a British Racing Green Miata? I know of only one in Portland (Yes, I know you're not selling it Karyl) but I like the color enough that I'd be willing to have it shipped here if I can find one anywhere. There wouldn't be someone that's looking at buying a Merlot Mica M Edition and selling their BRG on this list, would there be? A young couple would be quite grateful. 8) B. I've heard of grand Miata trips - 30+ Miatas making everyone else turn heads - but I know nothing of a Portland, Oregon Miata club. Nearest club I've heard of is the Mount Hood club, but I only know of one or two on this list enrolled. Should I enroll in Puget Sound and drive up there? I'm sure I could be talked into an extra 3 hours each way tacked onto my weekend. :) I can't stop smiling thinking about this car - I guess the dark, Need-to-go-fast side of me loses on this one, but is complacent as long as I keep mentioning the turbo. Question: What is there in Portland, Miatawise? C. I still need to drive on on the freeway. This is a longshot, but I've looked all over Portland, and there's no dealer to be found that has the time or willingness to let me drive one more than around the block if I'm not going to drive it home. Would someone in the Portland area be willing to show me a Miata on the freeway? I don't need to drive - I just want to know how it accelerates from 65-80, if it's comfy at high speeds, etc. I know around town this car is a little piece of heaven. If not, please - SOMEONE email me this information - I'm dying to know. Such a neat car. D. Is there a new-Miata-owner FAQ? If not - there should be, and I'd be willing to put it together, so long as I don't have to research all of the information personally. ;) My goal would be to have a file that contains as many answers as possible about things to expect, what you can do to help maintain your car, answers to radar detector, air horn, wash'n'wax questions, etc. Sort of like the mythical "How to raise your child, Vols. 1-12" set, but for your Miata. I've taken enough of your time, but WOW. This is for sure a great little car. I'll hold back my barrage of questions for now - Email me at blair@teleport.com.
