In my experience, power handling ratings tend to be pretty nebulous. 
Driving high quality speakers with sufficient power (avoiding clipping)
should allow you to avoid problems.  Power output ratings on amplifiers 
(especially car-audio equipment) also tend to be somewhat relative, 
depending on distortion levels, bandwidth, etc.
