As I understand it, the tiedowns are intended to prevent the car from sliding into other cars while on the ship (assuming the main attachment on the tires breaks loose). In other words, Mazda would rather have the bumpers messed up on one car than have the bodywork trashed on several. They really should be removewd by the dealer, to prevent their misuse, but I guess that makes too much sense (A/C is dealer installed, right?)
