My brother has a dark Pearl blue car which I wash, but with water only, no car wash stuff. I don't have any real problems with the streaks if its washed in the shade while the car is cool With my car (the one that counts), it is red (never having a red one again) and to keep it in show car condition, I wash twice (once if I just cannot get to it and it isn't dirty anyway) a week with water only, but I have 3 chamois for it. No I am not too fastidious, but the red (in highly polished state) shows up all the water left behind. One chamois for general use, one which seems to pick up all the little bits, and a third older chamois for door jams etc. If the car is well polished, the water doesn't even stay on the car (use a bucket of water at the end) to leave streaks. Interesting. The way I was taught was to brake with the ball of my foot (almost normally) and to roll my foot over to the right using the right edge of my foot to hit the accelerator. (Maybe we're saying the same thing, but I thought the rearmost part of the foot was called the heel?) BTW, to make this easier it is possible to remove the Miata's accelerator pedal and bend it a bit to the left... cu, Gary ÿ ============================================================================== >From archive-owner Mon Mar 27 21:07:52 1995 From: "Alex Little ((919) 254-5038)" Subject: Miata roof sitting creates cat scratch fear Date: Mon, 27 Mar 1995 21:07:29 -0500 Based on my experience, cats aren't too tough on a Miata soft top. Two of my wife's cats (Bad Bob and Monkey Boy) spend several hours a day 'driving' the miata and I've noticed no adverse effects other than paw prints on the car. (My current top is about 4 years old.) I'm not an expert on cats, but based on my experience, the best way for keeping them off the car may be to place a cat bed and cat-scratch-o- thingey on the roof. They're certain to avoid any blatant patronizing and will likely move along to some place where they feel less welcome. I had a stack of GM horns left over from my high school years of Chevy ownership (I'm not sure how I ended up with 5...). They ranged from a '67 Camaro to a '78 fullsize pickup and all looked identical except for the mounting bracket. One is straight, the other is "L" shaped. I used one of the "L" shaped bracketed horns and bolted it to the driver's side lower air conditioner condenser mounting tab. I ran a wire from the stock horn to the GM horn. The combination of the GM and factory horns works great and sounds good too. If you have A/C, you might have a more difficult time finding a mounting point. Most auto wreckers will have a pile of horns to choose from. Take your Miata with you and find a horn with a bracket that fits in a good spot. Sorry I can't be more specific about a mounting point for an A/C car. Haven't decided yet on which type to buy. Any comments (pro or con) on Koni or Gabi would be appreciated. Any advice from anyone that has replaced their shocks themselves would also be greatly appreciated. I have average mechancial ability and all the necessary tools (I think). I read that the ball joints have to be separated when replacing the front shocks. Is this a big deal? Can the entire evolution be accomplished in my driveway with the car on jack stands or do I need to put the car on lift. I'm fairly new to the list so if all this has been discussed before, I apologize. Thanks in advance for any and all info. One problem a friend with a Alfa Romeo Spyder Veloce (cloth top) was the cats sharpening thier claws on the top. We used cat-gut (I thought it was appropriate) suture material to repair the top. Then he bought a "Scat mat". The Scat mat he got out of a mail order catalog and gives a little shock to the feline when they jump on it. He once in the presence of numerous cat lovers asked how to increase the power of the Scat mat t fry the poor little kitties. I thought there was going to be a lynching. -Mac. These are all availible from Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies 800-688-6946 I will include prices too. Castrol SRF supposedly Pegasus claims their best brake fluid wet boiling point of 518F and dry BP of 590F. Exceeds DOT 4 can amke a critical difference when using with mettalic pads with high thermal conductivity. 1 Liter can Part No. 3343-1 $79.99 Wilwood Hi-Temp 570 racing Brake Fluid: Dry BPof over 570F exceeds DOT Spec 3 by over 170F and DOT 4 Spec by over 120F Has low viscosity to prevent aeration and foaming when bleeding. Can be mixed with other DOT 3Spec fluids, IMHO does not have great water absorption prevention and should only be used for racing apps when you change the fluid often. 12oz bottle Part #3307-12oz $6.99 AP550 and AP600 Exceeds DOT 3 Spec for wet BP and exceeds DOT 4Spec for dry BP. Most commercial brake fluid have a dry BP of less than 500F while AP 550 exceeds 550F and AP 600 exceeds 572F Warning AP 600 should not be mixed with any other type pf brake fluid and is not DOT approved for highway use. AP 550 17oz bottle Part#3305-17oz $11.99 AP 600 17pz bottle Part#3309 $21.99 I have used AP 550 in my Honda CRX Si with good results but changed to Castrol LMA without much difference in performance. Castrol LMA (Now called Castrol LMA-GT) Dry BP of 446F Because of low moisture absorption characteristics, Castrol LMA does not have to be bled as often as other brake fluids. 446F is adequate for most applications 12oz bottle Part #3308-12oz $4.29 None of the above are silicon based. Remember with hi-temp fluid and hard hi-temp metallic brake pads your first couple of attempts at stops on cool/cold morning may become a religious experience. Trust me on this one. but once they heat up they work great. Also the R-package front chin spoiler has ducts added to it that could easily be extended to the wheels for brake cooling. The Miata does not fade too bad, now the Mustang was another story, fade was its middle name. ;) Hopes this helps out. -Mac. They can be pulled down over the ears but they usually aren't windproof (my left ear got pretty cold in my MGB, which is much windier inside than the Miata). I recently found a rag wool cap with Gortex inside and it's really windproof. The best place for this type of cap is backpacking/mountain climbing stores. One thing bit strange is according to my Mazda dealer and parts dept. there is no power connector for the power aerial in Aussie spec '92 Miatz MX-5 but look! there is that power connector which already wired to the ignition. Anyway, the installation itself was very easy - you just simply take out the manual thing and replace with power aerial unit. One thing to remember is do not tighten the outer chrome cover bit too much. If you do, it will bend the fender which you can see if you look at from side. :( I notice upon power up, the reception is worse than the manual one. With certain station, the reception is too bad to listen. Oh well, since I'm going to install the second phase audio system next weekends I'll see what cause the poor reception at the same time. I'll keep you informed how it goes. Dennis (^_^; /\_/\ "Truth and falsehood are both whatever, and ( - - ) simultaneously not so, rather than not." ==_Y_== '-' Dennis J. I bought LEVOC set - it consists with clutch and brake pedals which is good since the accelerator is already very nice in Miata. You just stick them on the rubber pedals and viola! you got nice set of pedals to show off. :) Seriously, LEVOC parts comes with adjustable part - you can move half of its cover so you can adjust the gap between each pedal. I set brake and accelerator at close so I don't need to bend my ankle to do H&T. :) I remember it wasn't that expensive but then I bought it at dealer price through my mate. :) Dennis (^_^; /\_/\ "Truth and falsehood are both whatever, and ( - - ) simultaneously not so, rather than not." ==_Y_== '-' Dennis J. It includes more details about: - Exercising caution when renting a Miata from Sunbelt rentals - How great Butterfly luggage is - Fun roads to travel around San Diego - Two good places to stay and one to avoid - Feeling the shimmy - Observations about San Diego drivers =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D CAUTION with SUNBELT RENTALS. A few months ago, I investigated car rentals in the San Diego area. Sunbelt rentals were recommended. Someone on the list had mentioned to be sure and get a guarantee. So, I called Sunbelt in San Diego. One of the two people who work there said if I called and reminded them again two weeks prior to arriving, I would be assured of getting a Miata. When the time arrived, I called to remind them. I was again assured everything was set and our Miata would be waiting. We arrived in San Diego on March 9th. The next morning we called Sunbelt and heard =B3oh no=B2 on the phone. It seems that the Miata was never returned = and was not available. We were unhappy to say the least. Sunbelt workers said we could upgrade to =8Ca better car=B9 such as a Ford Crown Victoria or Must= ang GT convertible (they didn=B9t offer the Viper they had available) -- but they soon realized that they were talking to a MIATA lover who would not budge. Finally, they managed to contact Hertz, reserved a Miata, and drove us over to the Hertz rental station where we rented a Miata (an automatic, however, but at least it was a Miata). Hertz charges $49 per day. Sunbelt charges $39 per day. We were told by Sunbelt to stop back the next day. The Miata was sure to be back. We could then turn in the Hertz car, rent from Sunbelt, and we would receive our $10 reimbursement (for the Hertz cost) off the price of the Sunbelt rental. We stopped again on the 11th, twice on the 12th, and for the last time on the 13th. We gave up. The Miata never did come back. They said it was sunny and people just don=B9t return the cars on time when it is sunny. So much for their guarantee. (We heard that Hertz WILL absolutely guarantee a car if you put down $100. This is non-refundable if you cancel the order.) Sunbelt did give us $40 - the difference between the Sunbelt and the Hertz rental costs. Could this be because I kept mentioning how I was always reading the Miata list - a list with international impact! BUTTERFLY LUGGAGE. Just before our trip we ordered the Butterfly Luggage. It was a great investment. The quality of the product is great. All seven pieces fit neatly in the trunk and provided more than enough space for the two of us. BUT WAIT ... we were flying from Wisconsin to San Diego, not driving. I did not want to check the beautiful red luggage on the plane and have it get torn, greasy, or mangled by the baggage handling system. So, we packed the 21=B2 piece inside an old 21=B2 suitcase and packed the 17= =B2, the larger bag, and the toiletry bag inside a large suitcase. We carried on the garment bag, the hat box, and the totebag that I used for a purse. This worked great. (We obviously did not drive to the airport in the Miata.) In San Diego, we had made arrangements to leave the two old suitcases at the car rental (a reason why we returned to Sunbelt the last day). Because of the car rental problems, we did have to drive the Miata with all the suitcases to the car rental by the airport. The old 21=B2 fit in the trunk and the large suitcase rested just fine on the back ledge. Thank goodness we could keep the top down! =46UN SAN DIEGO ROADS. For those of you visiting the San Diego area, we found 79 from I-8 up to Julian to be a fun road. 78 and S3 towards Borrego Springs was fun. S22 to S3 and back to 79 was okay. The best time was 79 to 76 and S6 up Palomar Mountain. The challenge was S6 down the mountain because the weather turned cold, the rain became sleet, and the road formed a sheet of ice! Where we finally made it down and back near San Diego, roads were closed, some had disappeared - literally washed area - and we got lost due to numerous road closed signs. Oh, well, =B3we hadn= =B9t been down that road before!=B2 PLACES to STAY. In San Diego, the Elsbree House (619-226-4133 and tell them Paul & Sue sent you) is a great, friendly Bed & Breakfast. It is in Ocean Beach and only 2 blocks from the ocean. We found a quiet, clean 16-unit motel run by a lady originally from England to be a good place to stay near Julian. The Apple Tree Inn is actually a few miles northwest of Julian in the town of Wynola. PLACES to AVOID -- the San Diego Airport Travelodge on Pacific. We had our luggage by 9:15pm in the airport. I tried calling the lodge on the courtesy phone, but no answer. Finally, I stopped the courtesy van for the Harbor Island Travelodge. The driver gave me the office number for their place. I called and found out that the Airport travelodge sometimes does not answer in the evenings and that they have a contract with the Public Shuttle to transport their guests. The local traffic officer in charge of airport passengers called for the Public Shuttle. When it arrived, the driver was obviously wanting a paying fare so we waited for potential passengers to come out of the airport. When the traffic officer said the time for waiting was up, the driver went to the other side of the terminal and waited again until he was asked to leave. My husband said he must have been waiting for =B3vaporfare=B2. Finally, about 10:35 we were on our way t= o the hotel. SHIMMY. Even though our personal =8C93 LE does not have any signs of the dreaded shimmy, the rental did shimmy at around 55 mph. =46inally, SAN DIEGO DRIVERS. Hats off to the San Diego drivers! It is amazing to us how smoothly traffic flows when two lanes merge into one. This was our third time in San Diego, our second time driving in the area. We noticed before, that San Diego drivers have a knack for driving at faster speeds and merging with ease. We didn=B9t notice any drivers impatiently rushing to the front of a merging lane and then force a way into the other traffic. It seems everyone just took turns. Traffic on the interstate seemed to flow with ease as well. I sure wish a few of the Minneapolis, MN and Wisconsin drivers could take lessons. Again -- to San Diego.. it was a pleasure to drive in your city! See you again soon, I hope. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Susan Harrison '93 limited black/red WI plate: 4My PHD harrison@uwec.edu ÿ ============================================================================== >From archive-owner Tue Mar 28 09:19:08 1995 From: harrison@CNSVAX.UWEC.EDU (Dr. Susan Harrison) Subject: Installing Hella horns Date: Tue, 28 Mar 1995 09:17:51 -0500 Last Saturday, we installed Hella horns on our =8C93 LE. The engine fuse box was full so we went to the main power supply wire into the fuse box. Loosened the bolt connecting the wire to the fuse box. Slipped the lug on the end of the relay wire under the bolt. Tightened the bolt. The other difference -- mounted horns pointing downward on the two bolts holding the lines for the AC in front of the radiator. Sounds loud.
