If the miata is anyting like my other cars' power steering, just disconnecting
the pump will make the steering near impossible.  If you have ever tried to
turn the car after it stalls you know what i mean. 

With the power steering pump not on all the hydraulics still have the be over
come to turn the wheels.

To accomplish what you want you would have to do more that just remove the belt.
What that is i don't know.
