I recently changed the power steering to manual steering on my '91B. You need to remove the power steering pump, replace the steering rack with the base model rack ($221 from Roebuck Mazda), install the base model idler pulley and bracket, and get a shorter drive belt. Total cost for parts is around $300. This was covered a few years ago in the MCA magazine, although the part numbers they gave for the idler bracket were incorrect since you also need the appropriate nuts and bolts. The job is not too difficult, except care must be taken not to damage the boots when removing the tie-rod endsfrom the power steering rack. Obviously you will also need to get a 4 wheel alignment. I personally think the upgrade (downgrade?) is worth the money - my wife would tell you otherwise! Stephen Goode
