From: "Irwin, Chuck" Subject: silly question..... Date: Thu, 4 May 1995 18:45:52 -0400
>So excuse my ignorance BUT..... >What is directly behind the seats? Is it the gas tank? >Or is that where Mazda put the babe magnet? :) Wishful thinking would have me believe that the "babe magnet" (your term not mine) is in the drivers seat. Unfortunately the only thing in the drivers seat is usually a strange attractor :) But, onto your question. The gas tank is centered in the car between the seats and to the rear. It slopes up backwards from the front, following the rear bulkhead of the car. There is a shoe box sized "tunnel" on either side of the tank that is accessible from the trunk. Removing the spare gets you to the passenger side tunnel, removing the plate in the trunk on the drivers side gets you access to the drivers side tunnel and the fuel fill/spill lines. Under the carpeting in the parcel deck is an access plate which gets you to the fuel level sensor, and the fuel output line and some other junk that I forgot. Also under the carpet is your alarm antenna wire. The tunnels are great for temporary/ longterm storage. My alarm is mounted on the passenger side, with plenty of room for storage, I will probably relocate the jack and tire change tools here, as it is accessible when the spare is removed anyway. I keep tools/spare parts in the drivers side. These could be useful for long trips when you need someplace to put your dirty socks till you reach a laundry.
