One other interesting aspect of red/amber illumination is that it is very hard to see. While in France recently, I was surprised to find that all the cars had yellow headlights. I asked someone why and the told me that there was much less glare. That's true; there's also much less light. Considering the dash works fine as it is, why change it to a decidedly less user-friendly configuration in the name of style? Just wondering... Oh, and I have no idea why that's useful in submarines.
