Little Rubber Protectors 6/2/95 7:53 AM Whilst cleaning out the interior of my Miata over four months of ownership, I have continually found little rubber protector sleeves. They are two to three inches long, shaped like a U, with one side about half as long as the other, and lined with double-stick adhesive tape on the inside edge. After searching the interior of the car to figure out where these pieces came from, I finally discovered some remaining on the metal braces that support the rag top. They seemed to protect the braces from eventually cutting through the fabric, so I quickly stuck all the pieces that had fallen off back on. Well, they kept falling off, so yesterday, when I took the car in for a checkup, I expressed my concern. I got very nervous when the service tech looked at me like a space alien and said he had never seen one before. "I don't even know where that goes," he said. "Great," I thought. "My top is going to rip to shreds one day, and these guys don't know how to prevent it." I was wrong. The tech looked into it, and it turns out the protectors are used during assembly only, and should have been removed from the unit before my car was delivered. While leaving the protectors on won't hurt anything, don't worry if you occasionally find one on your floor.
