There has been this thing going on RE: basketball, and team jinxes, on the net. It's not my thing, but it reminds me to tell you why the Indy 500 lineup was not the way you thought it would be. I didn't think about this until later, but here's why Penske didn't make the race, and why this was the first race in a third of a century without an Unser in it. The below listed events and their chronology are all true. I leave it to you to make what you will of the cause and effect (if any). You see, a couple of our local Miata club members (Chesapeake Area Miatas - CAM) was kind enough to host a Sunday, Memorial Day weekend gathering at his & her place (thanks again, Mike & Jan!). This was an "et what you brung" thing, with the club supplying beverages (I assume - it was free, so I drank it, whatever the case). Anyway, wife Anne and I decided a couple weeks earlier (about the time of the first weekend of Indy qualifying) to make up an appropriate dish of some sort. We have a CARA (Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary) cookbook, with recipes from various well known and not so well known auto racing personalities and their families. What could be more appropriate than to cook up a pot of Mom Unser's Albuquerque chili? What can I say? Geez, I'm awful sorry, Al, Emmo, & Roger -- And BTW: Whose recipe do you want me to use next year? --Jack M. & KANSEI--
