I can't claim this as original; believe I saw it somewhere on the net, or in
the magazine, before.  But, since it hasn't shown up again, here you go:
 
How about getting a box of Pampers (or whatever brand of disposable
diapers)?  One of those around the base of the filter should do the trick to
soak up the oil during filter removal.  Dunno what they cost, but I imagine
it's less than a buck a diaper.  (I'm lazy - we pay someone else to do it.)
