Although both are cotton, terry has little loops, rather than the smooth surface of something like a cloth diaper. According to the Meguiar's rep (Jesse something?), the little loops give the dirt a place to go as you wipe the car. If you use a smooth cloth like a diaper, the dirt particles have no place to go, so it has the potential to scratch the surface. Made sense to me...
